Lenticular carbon filters offer the particulate removal of a standard depth filter as well as the decolorization of activated carbon. These depth filters come pre-impregnated with activated carbon, eliminating the need to introduce loose carbon into your slurry and filter it out later.
Activated carbon plays a critical role in the botanical extract industry because of its unique ability to remove chlorophyll after the initial extraction process. This is especially important when polar solvents such as ethanol are used during the extraction process. These lenticular carbon filters will effectively remove the co-extracted chlorophyll without impacting the flavor or desired extractables your solution.
Activated carbon is highly porous over a broad range of pore sizes, from larger cracks and crevices down to a molecular scale. This high porosity gives it unique absorptive properties. Activated carbon generally contains surface areas in the range of 500-2,000 m²/gm.
“Activation” refers to the development of the adsorption properties of carbon. Adsorption occurs when the organic molecules bond to the internal pores of the activated carbon. This happens in pores slightly larger than the molecules being adsorbed, which makes it extremely important to match the molecule being adsorbed to the pore size of the activated carbon.
Different grades of carbon, such as G60, CGP Super and S51 can be used in the manufacture of lenticular filters to provide specific adsorptive qualities based on the application. Specialty carbons are also able on request.
